Diabetes - Many may have it and not be aware of it!

The Canadian Diabetes Association estimates that diabetes now affects 246 million people globally.

Sadly many people with diabetes may not even be aware that they have it and will only find out when their diabetes has advanced.

Diabetes left untreated can cause damage to their body. Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, amputation and kidney failure in the world today.

The two most common types of diabetes are referred to as diabetes type 1 and diabetes type 2.

Type 1 diabetes can occur at any age from infancy to late thirties. Usually diabetes type 1 is diagnosed between infancy and age 30 or so.

People with type 1 diabetes require insulin injections to control their diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes usually develops after age 40, but can in some cases appear earlier. There have been cases reported about even children having type 2 diabetes now. So no age is immune when it comes to diabetes type 2.

Diabetes type 2 treatment includes diet control, exercise, self-monitoring of blood glucose and, in some cases, oral drugs or in some cases even insulin injections.

Symptoms of Diabetes Type 1

Some of the common symptoms of type 1 diabetes include: excessive thirst; constant hunger; excessive urination; weight loss for no reason; rapid, hard breathing; vision changes; drowsiness or exhaustion. These symptoms may occur suddenly.

Symptoms of Diabetes Type 2

People with type 2 diabetes may have similar, but less obvious, symptoms. Many have no symptoms and are only diagnosed after many years of onset. As a consequence, almost half of all people with type 2 diabetes are not aware that they have this life-threatening condition.

The importance of getting tested for diabetes cannot and should not be underestimated.
